Alexander Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown
Preamble
The inherent challenges of round-robin tennis mean at this point of the ATP World Tour Finals we’re often left scratching our heads, hastily looking for a mathematical tool and striving to determine the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. Yet this evening's contest between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is simple. It's a direct elimination: the successful player secures a semi-final matchup against Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the loser heads out.
Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the world No 3 is the player with greater achievements, has been the champion at this event twice before and leads their head-to-head six matches to three, having won both the games they've played on an enclosed hard court.
However … this particular court on which Felix has secured most of his championships, he is in great form after his impressive recovery against Ben Shelton on recently and he eliminated Zverev in the US Open third round in late summer. Furthermore, the court pace is quicker in the host city than at the US Open venue, which works even more in Auger-Aliassime's benefit.
If the German player is reserved, as he did against Sinner, and the Canadian presses the European player with his stinging serves and confident shots, there is a strong chance the North American athlete – the former prodigy who was previously positioned before the Spanish and Italian stars to succeed the legendary trio – who earns the uncertain distinction of playing against the top-ranked player on Saturday.
Action commences: at about 8.30pm local time, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
