Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would step back from public positions after legislative body made public his repeated communications with Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

He stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await observing their development".

The prominent academic, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's determination to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This news arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on this week to pass a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will afterward move to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has indicated he expects to approve the bill, after modifying his view on the subject following objections from his base.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel recently referenced several well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The messages showed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce Summers to influential world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers expressed he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and fix connections with the persons most important to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He led the institution from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties previously on Monday, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was not associated with the institution.

Summers became part of the board of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
