Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
