The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
