This Dominik Diamond Unofficial Video Game of the Year Roundup for The Past Year
So, what did you think of this year in your home? Did it seem all as good as people post on Facebook? Full of top marks for the kids and wild dress-up birthday parties for the adults? Or was it a ocean of disappointment with only occasional entertaining moments? Could any part be actually real, or is everyone now AI-generated virtual entities with celebrity dental work?
I have gathered my thoughts together, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the paramount thing in any given year: what titles we enjoyed the most. So here goes:
Title Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In the actual world."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I suggested it. I respect that.
Title Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where the Shark has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Title the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is a machine. Even better than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy digital pastime, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that endlessly add to their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the start. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Game That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I would happily play any time. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I present that verbatim, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an astute judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a punishingly tough Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is flawless if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names bellowed from the back door at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
